Lake Almanor, open every month of the year
We are at the north end of the lake, about half a mile to a mile from the water. Under the statewide rule Lake Almanor is open to trout fishing all year with a five trout daily bag. Its tributaries are not, and that difference is the one that costs people a citation.
The regulations below are quoted from the California Code of Regulations itself, not paraphrased from another lodge's blog.
- Open to trout all year
- Five trout a day, ten in possession

The short version
- The lake is open all year with a five trout daily bag and a ten trout possession limit, under the statewide rule for inland lakes.
- The tributaries follow a different rule. Saturday preceding Memorial Day through 30 September, five trout. Fish a creek in October on the lake's season and you are wrong.
- The Hex hatch is the week people plan a year around. Late June into early July, evening into dark, and the west shore is where it happens.
- A California fishing licence is required. Buy it before you arrive.
- It is not only a fishing lake. There is a paved, non-motorised trail down the west shore, and the ride starts near our door.
The regulations, quoted and cited
Most "guide to Lake Almanor" pages tell you the lake is open all year and stop there. That half of the sentence is right. The half they leave out is the half that gets somebody written up.
The lake
Lake Almanor is not listed as a special-regulation water, so the general statewide rule governs it. Title 14 of the California Code of Regulations, section 5.85(a)(1):
All inland lakes, reservoirs, and ponds, including those on private lands, are open to fishing all year with a five-trout daily bag limit and ten-trout possession limit.

We checked section 7.50, the alphabetical list of trout waters with special fishing regulations, for Lake Almanor itself on 23 September 2026. The lake does not appear there. Only its tributaries do.
The tributaries

So the creeks running into Almanor open on the Saturday before Memorial Day and shut on 30 September. Outside that window they are closed, while the lake a few hundred yards away is open. The reason is spawning browns moving up out of the lake in autumn, which is precisely when an angler is most tempted to follow them.
Check it yourself before you fish. California's regulations are revised during the year and a booklet downloaded in spring can be out of date by autumn. The two citations above are the sections to look up: 5.85 for the lake, 7.50 for the tributaries. We check this page and restamp the date when we do.
The year on the water
Open all year does not mean the same year all the way through.

The Hex timing and the evening window are as the angling press describes them, principally California Fly Fisher's own Lake Almanor coverage, read 23 September 2026. We are quoting anglers there, not a state agency, and we say so rather than asserting it as fact of our own.
What swims in it
Brown trout, rainbow trout, Chinook salmon and smallmouth bass. Almanor has a long reputation for large browns, and the angling press and local fishery groups are the source for that reputation rather than any figure we can cite from the state. We will not print a record weight or an average size we have not verified.
The Almanor Fishing Association publishes regular local reports including lake levels, and that is a better weekly read than anything a lodging page could keep current.
Getting on the water
Here is a section other lodging pages fill in and we are not going to.
We have not yet sourced which public boat ramp is nearest to 1487 County Road 324, or how far it is. Rather than guess at a distance or name the wrong ramp, we have left it out. We will tell you what we actually know about parking it here, and we will not tell you what we do not.
What we can say: the Chamber's published cycling route, which runs down the lake's west shore, ends at the Canyon Dam Boat Launch, so that is a public launch at the far end of the lake from us. For the nearer options, the Almanor Fishing Association and the Lake Almanor Area Chamber are the local sources worth asking.
Not just fishing
The Lake Almanor Recreation Trail is a paved, non-motorised path along the lake's west shore, closed to motor traffic and to horses, open to walkers and bicycles. It is the best thing to do on the lake without a boat.
On its length, sources genuinely disagree and we would rather say so than pick the flattering number. Recreation.gov and the Lake Almanor area guide put it at about 11 miles. Plumas County's own tourism site calls it 19. Trail mapping sites log the section they measured at nearer 10. Take it as "around ten to eleven miles of continuous paved trail on the west shore, with more of it being built".
That last part is real: a paved extension of roughly 3.8 miles is under construction northward toward Chester along State Route 89, set back from the highway behind a vegetated buffer, reported by Plumas Sun in May 2026 and by Caltrans in its West Almanor project description. The forest along the new section burned almost entirely in the 2021 Dixie Fire.
And the ride itself starts beside us. The Lake Almanor Area Chamber publishes a fifteen mile route, rated easy, about an hour and a half one way: "Begin the ride at the Cedar Chalet Bakery, two miles west of Chester on Highway 36, and head south on old Highway 89." Four miles of old 89, then the Forest Service trail down the shore to the Canyon Dam Boat Launch.
Early starts
Anglers leave before it is light, which makes a checkout time irrelevant and a coffee maker decisive.
The motel rooms here have a kitchenette with a coffee maker, a kettle and a microwave. You are not waiting for a lobby to open at seven, and you are not driving into town for it. That is the whole of the argument, and it is worth more to somebody fishing the Hex at five in the afternoon and again at five in the morning than any amenity list.
What to bring
- A California fishing licence, bought before you arrive rather than at six in the morning.
- Layers for an evening on the water. At four and a half thousand feet the temperature drops fast once the sun is off the lake.
- A head torch, if you are fishing the Hex. The best of it happens after you can see your fly.
- Everything you need for a float tube or pontoon, including the flotation device, light and whistle California requires on the water.
- A cooler. We cannot yet tell you whether there is a fish cleaning station or a freezer here, so bring your own answer.
Where you sleep
We are at the junction of Highway 36 and Highway 89 at the north end of the lake, three miles west of Chester, open every month of the year, which matters on a lake that is also open every month of the year.

RV sites 50 amp, full hookup, on gravel. From $60 a night plus county tax.
No booking fee, no resort fee, no cleaning fee. Plumas County adds 9 percent occupancy tax and a 3 percent tourism district assessment, both stopping after 30 nights. First bookable night is 30 September 2026.
