Getting on Lake Almanor when you are not fishing

Our Lake Almanor guide is a fishing regulation page: the statewide rule, the tributary rule, the Hex hatch. This one is for the rest of the lake. Boat launches, swim beaches, and the paved trail down the west shore.

The public boat launches and beaches below come from Plumas County’s own tourism site and the Lake Almanor Area Chamber, read 24 September 2026.

The short version

Two public boat launches serve the lake. Canyon Dam, open all year, and the Almanor launch on the west shore, open seasonally.
Several private marinas and resorts also launch boats, generally for a fee, including operations near Prattville and Big Cove.
Swim beaches exist around the shoreline, and the Lake Almanor Recreation Trail reaches the water at more than one point without needing a beach at all.
Lake level moves. This is a reservoir, not a natural lake, and PG&E manages the level. Rocky footing at the shoreline is normal, not a defect.
We have not sourced a distance from our own address to either launch, and we would rather tell you that than guess.

The two public launches

Plumas County’s own tourism page for the lake describes the public access this way: two public boat launches, one at Canyon Dam open year round and the Almanor launch on the west shore of the lake, north of Prattville, open seasonally.

Canyon Dam sits off Highway 89 near the Rocky Point campground area, at the south end of the lake. It is also where the paved recreation trail ends, so it does double duty as a boat launch and a trailhead. Beyond the two public launches, the Lake Almanor Area Chamber lists a number of private resorts and marinas around the shoreline that launch boats for a fee, including an operation near Prattville with a store and a restaurant attached.

Bring boat shoes. More than one source on the lake makes the same point: the shoreline at several access points is rocky rather than sand, and wading in barefoot is not the move.

Swim beaches

Swim beaches are spread around the shoreline rather than concentrated at one park, and the county and Chamber sites are the ones to check for what is open in a given season, since a reservoir’s beach edge moves with the water level. We are not going to name a single beach as the beach, because we have not stood on each one and we would rather send you to a source that keeps this current than freeze a name in a static page.

On the water without a boat

The Lake Almanor Recreation Trail is paved and closed to motor traffic, running down the west shore and reachable from the Canyon Dam launch, among other points. If paddling rather than boating is the plan, the same launches and beaches work for a kayak, canoe or paddleboard as for a boat with a trailer, and a rocky shoreline matters less when you are carrying the craft in rather than backing a trailer down a ramp.

What we have not sourced yet, said plainly

Here is the section every other lodging page on this lake fills in with a confident number, and we are not going to.

We do not have a sourced distance from 1487 County Road 324 to either public launch, and we are not going to invent one. Where you sleep

We are at the north end of the lake, about half a mile to a mile from the water, three miles west of Chester.
