Fishing water near Cedar Lodge, beyond the lake

The short version

The North Fork Feather River runs through the town of Chester itself, on its way into the north end of Lake Almanor.
Warner Creek forms where Kings Creek meets Hot Springs Creek, up the Warner Valley road, and it feeds the North Fork.
Domingo Creek starts at Domingo Springs, at the end of the pavement on the same road, and runs as a spring creek before turning to freestone water.
A California fishing license is required for anyone 16 or older. The resident yearly fee is $64.54, a one day license is $21.09 for residents and nonresidents alike.

The license, and what it costs

The Department of Fish and Wildlife’s own licensing page states the current resident sport fishing license fee at $64.54 for the full season, and a one day license at $21.09, the same price whether you live in California or not. Anyone 16 or older attempting to take fish in California waters needs one. Buy it online before you arrive rather than hunting for a shop at six in the morning.

Fees and free fishing days change. The department also runs a small number of free fishing days each year where no license is required at all. Check the department’s own licensing page for the current fee and the current calendar before you buy.

The North Fork Feather River

The North Fork runs east through the upper part of its drainage, picks up Louse Creek and then Warner Creek, and passes directly through the town of Chester before entering the north end of Lake Almanor. Above town it is a mid sized stream rather than a big river, and the angling press describes the wild rainbow population as descendants of steelhead, strong fish that run 14 inches and larger in places.

Downstream of the lake the river becomes a different fishery entirely, reshaped by a series of dams and power plants, and that stretch is not what this page is about. What matters for a stay with us is the upper drainage, the water above the lake.

Warner Creek and Domingo Springs

Up the same Warner Valley road that reaches our full Lassen guide’s Warner Valley entrance, Kings Creek and Hot Springs Creek join to form Warner Creek as they enter the valley. Domingo Creek starts separately, at Domingo Springs, near the end of the pavement on the same road, sometimes called the Chester Warner Valley Road. It begins as a spring creek and turns to freestone water as it drops.

These are small streams: fast water over boulders and pocket water thick with willows, not a river you wade for a mile in open gravel. Access points near Domingo Springs and the High Bridge area are the ones the angling press names as a starting point.

What is actually in these creeks

The angling press draws a line worth knowing before you drive up there. The smaller headwater creeks, including Domingo Creek and Rice Creek, hold brook trout. The North Fork itself and Warner Creek hold rainbow and brown trout. In autumn, spawning brown trout move up out of the lake into these same tributaries, and some large fish can hold over into the season when the creeks open again around Memorial Day.

What to bring

A California fishing license, bought before you arrive.
Wading boots with real traction. This is boulder and pocket water, not smooth gravel.
A rod suited to small water. The creeks up Warner Valley are narrow and brushy, not a river you double haul on.
A layer for altitude. These creeks sit at 4,500 feet and higher, and the temperature drops fast once you are in shade.
